Mountain State Centers for Independent Living (MTSTCIL) will monitor and support all legislation during the 2008 WV Legislative Session that has a positive impact on the ability of West Virginians with disabilities to live independently in their homes and communities.
Specifically, MTSTCIL will support and focus on the following legislative priorities during the 2008 session.
As a member of the WV Centers for Independent Living (WVCIL), Mountain State Centers for Independent Living staff and consumers will share personal stories and educate legislators on the continuing need for additional state funds for Independent Living.
MTSTCIL will support the WV Division of Rehabilitation Services' request for an improvement of $450,000 to expand the availability of community-based supports in integrated settings to West Virginians with disabilities.
MTSTCIL is dedicated to improving the lives of people with disabilities. Since a number of the consumers we serve live in residential facilities and statistics show that people with disabilities and seniors are more likely to die trying to escape a fire, we are committed to educating our consumers on fire safety practices.
As part of our fire prevention initiative, MTSTCIL supports the adoption of legislation supporting Fire-safe Cigarettes and Firefighter Protection.
Through a Community Based Initiatives grant, the West Virginia State Fire Marshal's Office developed an online fire safety and prevention training. The training is available on the Mountain State Centers Independent Living Web site to enable the training be available in accessible format for people in the aging and disability community.
