Mr. P
Age 71
Kanawha County
Project - Assistive Technology
Total Project Cost: $1,995
When Mr. P contacted our center for services through the Title VII Part B Program, he needed assistance to increase his mobility and access to the community. Although Mr. P could drive, he was unable to load and stow the scooter in his vehicle.
Our center was able to obtain a trunk mounted electric lift which enables him with minimal assistance to travel about. With the electric lift Mr. P has regained his independence.

Project - Hearing Aids
Total Project Cost: $661.65
Mr. H had been waiting for quite some time for a hearing aid. He had originally applied to the WV Division of Rehabilitation Services, as they were administering the Title VII, Part B Program at that time. When the program was turned over to the WV Centers for Independent Living, we were able to assist Mr. H through a community partnership we have established with a local vendor.
Our center has developed a partnership with the Hearing Aid Store and they were able to provide him with his hearing aid in a fast and professional manner. He is able to hear and communicate better thus improving his independence by being able to communicate without relying on others to speak and communicate on his behalf.

Project - Home Modifications
Total Project Cost: $6,800
Mr. H. uses a wheelchair as a result of a severe electrical shock which occurred while he was working for a house moving company. He applied to our center for assistance through our Title VII, Part B Program. Prior to receiving our services, Mr. H. was unable to access his bathroom facilities and was dependent on a personal attendant for his self-care needs related to bathing and other personal hygiene activities.
After obtaining an assessment to identify his need and a contractor to provide the labor, our center modified his bathroom. We installed a roll-in shower, widened the doorway, relocated the hot water tank and made other accommodations to make the bathroom accessible. Mr. H is now able to bathe himself and tend to his personal hygiene activities independently without the aid of a personal assistant.
Mr. K.
Age 49
Kanawha County
Project - Assistive Technology
Total Cost: $1,049
Mr. K completed a transitional living program at the WV Rehabilitation Center. He moved into an apartment complex in the Charleston area and is dependent upon multiple support services for his day-to-day activities. He contacted our center in an emergency situation requesting a joystick and other components for his electric powered wheelchair. This type of assistance was not available to him through any other resource and he was virtually confined to his bed until he received the parts he needed.
Our center was able to expedite his request and he received the parts the very next day. Fortunately, Mr. K contacted us early in our fiscal year when our funding was still available. Through this assistance, Mr. K is not longer confined to his bed.
Mr. C
Age 37
Kanawha County
Project - Wheelchair Ramp
Total Project Cost: $88
Mr. C contacted our Center shortly after becoming paraplegic. His request was for a small ramp in order to navigate the one step into his home. This one step created a barrier which prohibited him from independently entering or exiting his home. In the event of a fire or other emergency he would have been helpless. For the small some of $88 our staff was able to complete the ramp and restore his independence.
