In West Virginia during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2008 of the structural fires reported during this period only 26 percent had working smoke alarms installed and over 34 percent did not.

In the structural fires reported during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2008 only 60 percent of the smoke alarms in use in West Virginia were operational, with 11 percent failing to operate.
