Mountain State Centers for Independent Living in Huntington and Beckley has started counting down the days to the arrival of the 20-man cycling team from "Push America".
Push America's - Journey of Hope 2005 is a 4,285 mile, 70-day cross-country cycling trek beginning on June 4, 2005 in Florence, Oregon and ending in Washington, DC on August 13, 2005.
Mountain State Centers for Independent Living will once again welcome the cyclists to West Virginia by hosting a reception and Friendship Visit for the cyclists at 821 Fourth Avenue in Huntington, WV on August 3, 2005 and again at 329 Prince Street in Beckley, WV on August 5, 2005.
The cyclists will arrive at our Huntington center for a tour at 5:30 p.m. on August 3, 2005. Following the tour MTSTCIL staff, consumers, and the cyclists will travel to Ritter Park for an evening dinner and an opportunity for everyone at MTSTCIL and the Journey of Hope team to network.
On August 5, 2005, the cyclists will travel to our center in Beckley. This will be the Journey of Hope's first visit to Beckley. Following a tour of our Beckley center at 6:00 p.m., MTSTCIL staff and consumers will host an evening dinner that will once again provide an opportunity for everyone at MTSTCIL and the cyclists to network.
The team will spend the night in 180 different cities as they pedal a combined total of more than 12,000 miles. They average daily ride is 75 miles.
Push America, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, was founded in 1977 and remains the exclusive philanthropy of Pi Kappa Phi with the purpose of instilling lifelong service in our fraternity members and serving people with disabilities through educational programs, awareness raising events, and donations of specially designed equipment and recreational environments.
Nationwide, Push America's Cycling Events raise funds and awareness on behalf of people with disabilities, providing a unique opportunity for members of Pi Kappa Phi to get involved in serving others on a national level. For 18 years, they have crossed the country spreading a message of acceptance and understanding of people with disabilities, all from the seat of a bike!
